Picard “Esatto.”

Kirk “Vicino al congedo?”

Picard “Ancora non ci penso.”

Kirk “Le voglio dire una cosa: no! Non accetti promozioni, non accetti trasferimenti, non accetti niente che la porti via dal suo ponte di comando, perché finché resta lì può fare la differenza!”

Kirk “… chi sono io per discutere con il Capitano dell’Enterprise? Come si chiama quel pianeta… Veridiano III?”

Picard “Sì.”

Kirk “Allora abbiamo tutto contro e la situazione disperata.”

Picard “Diciamo così…”

Kirk “Se Spock fosse qui, direbbe che solo un essere umano illogico e irrazionale accetterebbe una missione del genere… sarà divertente!”

(stops, grins)
I know I know, it’s illogical to
celebrate something you had nothing to do
with, but I haven’t had the chance to
congratulate you on your appointment to
the ambassadorship so I thought I’d seize
the occasion… Bravo, Spock — they tell
me your first mission may take you away
for awhile, so I’ll be the first to wish
you luck… and to say…
(beat, emotional)
I miss you, old friend. 

I suppose I’d always imagined us…
outgrowing Starfleet together. Watching
life swing us into our Emeritus years… 

I look around at the new cadets now and
can’t help thinking… has it really been
so long? Wasn’t it only yesterday we
stepped onto the Enterprise as boys?
That I had to prove to the crew I
deserved command… and their respect?

I know what you’d say — ‘It’s their turn
now, Jim…’ And of course you’re
right… but it got me thinking: 

Who’s to say we can’t go one more round?
By the last tally, only twenty five
percent of the galaxy’s been chartered…
I’d call that negligent. Criminal even —
an invitation. You once said being a
starship captain was my first, best
destiny… if that’s true, then yours is
to be by my side. If there’s any true
logic to the universe… we’ll end up on
that bridge again someday.

Admit it, Spock. For people like us, the
journey itself… is home.

Kirk “Ambasciatore… sarei venuto io stesso a Vulcan, per esprimere tutta la mia compressio-“

Sarek “Mi risparmi i suoi convenevoli. Sono stato al suo Ministero, ho saputo della notizia riguardante Genesis e ho letto il suo rapporto.”

Kirk “Suo figlio ha affrontato la morte con grande coraggio.”

Sarek “Perché l’ha lasciato da solo sul pianeta Genesis? Spock si fidava di lei! E lei ha voluto negargli il suo futuro.”

Kirk “… non ho visto alcun futuro…”

Sarek “Soltanto il suo aspetto fisico è morto, Kirk. Lei è stata l’ultima persona ad averlo visto Capitano.”

Kirk “Sì, è così.”

Sarek “Allora saprà che doveva venire con lui a Vulcan.”

Kirk “Ma perché?”

Sarek “Perché lui glielo aveva chiesto, non ricorda? Le aveva anche confidato… la sua vera essenza, tutto ciò che non era corporeo e le aveva chiesto di essere portato da noi. E di portare ciò che le aveva dato: il suo Katra. Il suo spirito vivente.”

Kirk “Signore… suo figlio era per me molto di più di quanto immagini. Gli avrei dato la vita se avessi potuto salvarlo. Mi creda se le dico che non mi ha mai chiesto quanto mi dice.”

Sarek “Sì, ma potrebbe averlo fatto non apertamente…”

Kirk “E allora come-“

Sarek “Kirk! Io devo conoscere i suoi pensieri. Posso raggiungere la sua mente?”

Kirk “… certo.”

Sarek “… mi perdoni. Lui non è qui… credevo che la sua mente si fosse fusa con la sua, come facciamo noi vulcaniani, quando il corpo è prossimo alla fine.”

Kirk “Eravamo separati… non poteva toccare…”

Sarek “Capisco. Allora tutto quello che lui è stato, tutto ciò che sapeva… è andato perduto.”

Kirk “La prego, aspetti! Non è possibile, Sarek, se c’era tutto questo in gioco… Spock lo avrebbe trovato un modo!”
