Kirk “Certamente. Vi ho restituito gli orrori della guerra. I Vendikar penseranno che avete rotto il patto e che vi preparate per combattere una guerra. Con armi vere. E vorranno fare altrettanto. Solo che il loro prossimo attacco vi darà molto più da fare che rilevare le cifre da un computer. Distruggeranno le vostre città, il vostro pianeta. E voi naturalmente passerete al contrattacco. Se fossi in voi comincerei a preparare le bombe. Sì, Consigliere, sta per scoppiare una vera guerra. Può scegliere se combatterla con armi vere… o considerare un’altra alternativa. Sì, di porvi fine. E di fare la pace.”
Consigliere “Non può esservi la pace, non capisce? L’abbiamo ammesso anche a noi stessi. Siamo una specie nata per uccidere, è istintivo. E voi siete uguali. Il suo Ordine Generale 24!”
Kirk “D’accordo. È istintivo. Ma gli istinti si possono dominare! Siamo esseri umani… con le mani imbrattate del sangue di milioni di anni di barbarie! Ma possiamo evitarlo. Ammettiamo pure di essere… assassini, ma oggi possiamo non uccidere. Questo basta! La consapevolezza che possiamo non uccidere! Contattate Vendika… vedrete che anche là sono terrorizzati, sgomenti e inorriditi come lo siete voi e faranno di tutto pur di evitare le mie prospettive. Pace o distruzione totali... dipende da voi.”

Picard “Esatto.”

Kirk “Vicino al congedo?”

Picard “Ancora non ci penso.”

Kirk “Le voglio dire una cosa: no! Non accetti promozioni, non accetti trasferimenti, non accetti niente che la porti via dal suo ponte di comando, perché finché resta lì può fare la differenza!”

Picard “Torni indietro con me, mi aiuti a fermare Soran. Torni a fare la differenza.”

Kirk “… chi sono io per discutere con il Capitano dell’Enterprise? Come si chiama quel pianeta… Veridiano III?”

Picard “Sì.”

Kirk “Allora abbiamo tutto contro e la situazione disperata.”

Picard “Diciamo così…”

Kirk “Se Spock fosse qui, direbbe che solo un essere umano illogico e irrazionale accetterebbe una missione del genere… sarà divertente!”

Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to
you…
(stops, grins)
I know I know, it’s illogical to
celebrate something you had nothing to do
with, but I haven’t had the chance to
congratulate you on your appointment to
the ambassadorship so I thought I’d seize
the occasion… Bravo, Spock — they tell
me your first mission may take you away
for awhile, so I’ll be the first to wish
you luck… and to say…
(beat, emotional)
I miss you, old friend. 

I suppose I’d always imagined us…
outgrowing Starfleet together. Watching
life swing us into our Emeritus years… 

I look around at the new cadets now and
can’t help thinking… has it really been
so long? Wasn’t it only yesterday we
stepped onto the Enterprise as boys?
That I had to prove to the crew I
deserved command… and their respect?

I know what you’d say — ‘It’s their turn
now, Jim…’ And of course you’re
right… but it got me thinking: 

Who’s to say we can’t go one more round?
By the last tally, only twenty five
percent of the galaxy’s been chartered…
I’d call that negligent. Criminal even —
an invitation. You once said being a
starship captain was my first, best
destiny… if that’s true, then yours is
to be by my side. If there’s any true
logic to the universe… we’ll end up on
that bridge again someday.

Admit it, Spock. For people like us, the
journey itself… is home.
